Currently, only two populations of C. boulengeri are known to exist in the wild. Just 24 live individuals
were documented by museums and nature conservation organizations from 2000 to 2017 (Loehr, pers. comm.). In 2017, an expedition organized and led by Dr Victor Loehr on behalf of Dwarf Tortoise Conservation — in which I participated — managed to discover one of the two populations. C. boulengeri is currently listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List (Hofmeyr et
al., 2018) and is protected by CITES (Appendix II, EU Annex B). Existing populations face strong predation pressure from crows and ravens, habitat degradation due to overgrazing, and the effects of climate change (habitat alteration due to aridification).
