ARBOREAL GECKO’S LABORATORY AT BION TERRARIUM CENTER (BTC)
– Philip-Sebastian Gehring, Dmitri Tkachev PHILIP-SEBASTIAN GEHRING: I CAME TO HERPETOLOGY VIA HERPETOCULTURE ……
________________________________________________________________
For the first time I came to Madagascar in 2003 and immediately found it to be the place of sacred power and inspiration for me.
My last visit to this Magical Island was in 2023 (it was my 8th trip); there I spent five weeks on the East and West coasts of the country. Within recent 21 years, Madagascar has acquired a tourist infrastructure, but has irretrievably lost many sacred corners of its nature and important habitats of local fauna, up to 80% of which being endemic.At present, the massive nature destruction is a big trouble here.
When in 2010 BION Terrarium Center opened the first laboratory for breeding rare species, leaf-tailed geckos immediately became an important subject of our attention.
The opportunity to observe these lizards in Madagascar, legally export them, as well as organize and control their keeping on the spot before transportation, turned out to be important components of our success.
Over 15 years, we have learned how to breed about 10 species of these unique lizards (some in 8 generations), assembled a professional team, published a series of husbandry and breeding manuals and a few scientific articles.
Actually, we have created reserve populations of a number of certain species, which, if necessary, can be reintroduced into nature. Our methods can also be successfully used for breeding related species.
Taking this opportunity, I want to express my deep gratitude to Oleksii Marushchak, BION’s Scientific Director and Content Editor of the RH Journal. Special thanks are due to Anastasia Marushchak, Head, BION’s Arboreal geckos Laboratories.
Another positive factor is communication and exchange of experience with colleagues from the private sector, zoos and other organizations. Among them are Chester Zoo (UK), DGHT (Germany), Herpetofauna Foundation (The Netherlands), private keepers Jan Suchanek, Seva Seleznev, Joseph Magurov and many others.
In this publication, you will read an interview with Philipp Sebastian Gehring, German herpetologist and
the author of perhaps the most successful book on leaf-tailed geckos to date;
Husbandry and breeding manuals (including quite interesting material from Chubert Dobosz, Polish breeder), scientific articles, reflections from trips to Madagascar.
Some of them were published in The RH Journal and some will be included in this edition.
Important! This issue will be published in a digital version and updated regularly with new materials (including those not yet published in the RH Journal), being a dynamically developing source for continuous use. To be continued!
If you take the Expert’s level of RHF membership, you will have free access to all RHF special editions, as a valuable bonus
Another option is to purchase any of the RHF Library publications in digital version.
Thank you for your personal support!
