Garter Snakes Make Friends, Organize Their Society Around Females

Garter snakes have something in common with elephants, orcas, and naked mole rats: they form social groups that center around females.

The snakes also tended to associate with others of the same sex and similar ages, the analysis showed. Among both sexes, the more social individuals tended to be healthier, suggesting the snakes benefited from their friendly ties.
