Guidelines For Authors

Guidelines for authors of the Responsible Herpetoculture Journal
(RHJ)

About Us
The Responsible Herpetoculture Journal (RHJ) is the official publication of the Responsible Herpetoculture Foundation (RHF). This journal is a professional, cutting edge herpetocultural publication. It promotes the achievements of the private sector, zoological institutions, and conservation and is written by some of the best reptile and amphibian experts in the world. The RHJ is published bi-monthly and is managed by an international editorial team( including editors from Germany, Ukraine, UK, Costa Rica, Australia and USA) with Philippe de Vojoli as  Honorable President, covering almost every region of the world.

Content
We want to give you as much freedom as possible to create articles. However, we do have a few guidelines that need to be followed. All texts should be solidly researched and, as far as possible, reflect the current state of science. They should also be interesting and accessible to a varied audience.

Authors should consider pitching their article subject to a member of the Editorial Board ahead of writing, to ensure it is suitable. Authors should also only use original materials and any direct quotes should be cited or referenced appropriately.

Stylization

Our Editorial Board is happy to assist you with formatting, however, we do have some preferences that will make the process quicker and easier.

The RHJ uses American-English and primarily imperial measurements, with metric measurements in brackets. Our preferred software is Microsoft Word and preferred font is “Times New Roman” in size 12. Please do not use any complex formatting, a single-column text is best. Latin names and prefaces should be written in italics. The binomial name should consist of an uncapitalized common name, followed by brackets and scientific names, as well as the name of the discoverer and year. An example of this is green iguana (Iguana iguana Linnaeus, 1758).

Boldface can be used to distinguish the title and subheadings. Citations are given in parentheses. These may or may not be used in the final print but should be included for reference where appropriate.

Article length may vary. However, an ideal wordcount would sit between 2,000 and 3,500 words. Since the RHJ is an English-language magazine, it is advantageous to submit articles in English. Submissions in other languages will be translated by the editor in charge and finally reviewed by a native speaker. For questions of any kind, we are at your disposal, please use one of the addresses below. We will be happy to plan and create the article together with you.

We kindly draw the attention of all authors that the volume of the article should not exceed 10 text pages in A4 format (Times New Roman, 12 pt, single-spaced).

All pictures and other illustrations are included in this volume.

We ask you to arrange a deadline for submitting the article with one of our editors, so that the article is available on time before the editorial deadline and can be corrected without time pressure. We ask that you communicate any deadline changes as soon as possible.

Images

It is vitally important that we receive images to illustrate the article. Preferred formats are jpg and ppt. Please make sure that the image quality is as good as possible. Images should be at least 300 dpi if used for print output. The images should either be labeled or numbered accordingly, and a caption should be assigned to each number.

In many cases, a strong caption is just as important as a strong article. If images are submitted without a caption, Editors must use vague descriptions which are far less informative. If an author would like the images to be presented in a specific order, please insert the image into the article Word file, along with a caption and a figure reference. This way, you may refer readers to (Fig 1) within the text.

Submission
Please send the finished article to the editorial mailbox or to the responsible Editor. You will find the contact details at the end of this document. The text document is best sent as an e-mail attachment. If you have a lot of images to send, please submit them via a link to Dropbox or via WeTransfer. Please send as wider selection of images as possible, so that the Editors and Design Team have some options.

By submitting any article, photograph or other intellectual property, you are confirming that you are the owner of such intellectual property and hold all copyright privileges. Where a photograph required accreditation, the person submitting the article must also provide photographer credits. If the author is providing their own photography and wishes to be credited, the author must also make this clear in the image captions. The Editorial Board will hold the author personally responsible for any violations to third parties.

No complete sentences may be copied from internet sources or literature. If text passages are included, they must be treated as quotes and referenced accordingly. Each literature source should be listed in the index at the end of the article.

By submitting an image, you are granting permission for the Responsible Herpetoculture Foundation to use the material for advertising purposes and preview options for the issue. However, the author remains the copyright holder of all intellectual property and the Responsible Herpetoculture Foundation will not share content without informing the copyright holder first.

Further information
The authors and co-authors receive a PDF of their own article after publication, as well as access to the whole issue. In addition, they will receive free access to the website and thus to the previous, as well as subsequent issues. We are also happy to send T-shirts as a thank you. Please let us know your address for this purpose. In supporting the Responsible Herpetoculture Foundation, you are supporting the continuation of herpetoculture as a discipline and a project that benefits ex-situ conservation of Endangered species.

Advertising
For some articles, for example interviews with institutions, zoos and stores, there is the possibility that we can place advertising material in the magazine. Please let us know if you are interested in this additional benefit. We are interested in providing a stage for herpetological activities.

Thank you for your support and future cooperation,

The RHF Editorial Board.
