Ever wondered how turtles cross the road safely? Well in North Dumfries, they use tunnels!
Two of these underground crosswalks are currently in place, but the Region of Waterloo is building a third “turtle tunnel” under Roseville Road in North Dumfries to protect the wildlife in the area. The region’s project manager Matt Ropp explained the reasoning behind the locations.
The project started in 2015 when residents raised concerns about the high amount of animals dying on the roads in certain areas.
The tunnels are made out of plastic, half a meter deep and half a meter wide. They stretch the width of the road, shoulder-to-shoulder. Ropp told CityNews they are also made with the wildlife’s natural environment in mind, with a mud-like bottom.
