The NSW Department of Planning and Environment has been installing 15-centimetre-long narrow tubes made from PVC piping and bonded sand in the ground across the Monaro plains for the grassland earless dragon to use as artificial burrows. But 400 more are needed, so the local men’s shed has stepped in to help.

Landholders are being encouraged to help protect the dragon by retaining areas of native pasture and managing weeds on their property.

The Monaro grassland earless dragon is an endangered animal native to the Monaro grasslands between the towns of Cooma and Nimmitabel. The dragons normally inhabit wolf spider holes in the ground, but they’re in decline due to the spread of weeds and intensified wet and dry weather cycles.
