Useful Husbandry References

Dear visitors!

It is obvious that we are not the only ones who provide information about keeping and breeding of different reptiles and amphibians based on our own experience at BION Terrarium Center. There are a lot of other private breeders, farms and companies that readily share their information on this topic. In this section we have collected links to those of them we consider being the most adequate, informative and helpful for all hobbyists.

We are always happy to promote the like-minded people and organizations in this way and we hope that this list of helpful links will be a valuable source of info you are searching for in order to provide your herps with correct keeping conditions and organize your own breeding projects.

Similar Missions

In this section, we talk about organizations that support and promote herpetoculture. We will be glad to learn about new associates and like-minded people.
We are always open for cooperation!

Mission Statements of «Similar Missions» at Herpetoculture:

The United States Association of Reptile Keepers (USARK) is a science, education and conservation-based advocacy for the responsible private ownership of, and trade in reptiles and amphibians. Their goal is to facilitate cooperation between government agencies, the scientific community, and the private sector in order to produce policy proposals that will effectively address important husbandry and conservation issues.

The existence of the viable captive populations of many species of reptiles and amphibians, regardless of the hands in which they are held, represent an unprecedented and successful model in which private citizens can take an active role in saving species from the threat of extinction. A higher percentage of all reptile species have been bred in captivity than in any other class of vertebrate animals—most of that has occurred in private hands. Today we have the experience and knowledge to maintain every reptile species in captivity. Today the American herpetoculture community is successfully maintaining several hundred species of reptiles and amphibians in successful captive populations. This is one of the greatest triumphs of conservation in the past century, but it is unheralded, and it is unloved by those who would remove all animals from human hands.

If captive populations of herps are outlawed and disassembled, that will herald the death nell of many species. Legislation based on emotion, opinion, philosophy, and poor science is quietly having a potentially catastrophic effect on biodiversity.

The mission of the Turtle and Tortoise Preservation Group (TTPG) located in US is to ensure survival of the world’s turtles and tortoises through captive breeding. The TTPG supports the private ownership of chelonians and recognizes the substantial role that the private sector has played in the captive breeding and conservation of turtles and tortoises.

The TTPG recognizes that captive breeding reduces the pressure on wild populations and provides assurance colonies for species threatened in the wild due to habitat loss, disease, or natural disasters.

The TTPG has done a remarkable job of coordinating private turtle breeders to create a large number of self-sustaining captive populations of a large number of turtle species ,including threatened ones.

The TTPG Conference is held each November in Mesa, Arizona(including another one on 16.11.22-18.11.22) The TTPG Conference’s amazing lineup of speakers includes turtle and tortoise experts from around the world. The conference attracts attendees from all over the United States, Europe, Asia, Canada, and South America. Topics include captive care, nutrition, medical care, captive breeding, incubation tips, raising healthy offspring, enclosure design, and much more. Field trips include visits to private breeding facilities, local zoological institutions, and other interesting experiences, and there are often special evening events addressing conservation concerns, updates on legal issues and the “under 4” regulation”, presentations from USARK, Q & A sessions, and of course, lots of fun social time is enjoyed by attendees.

The TTPG is also has an impressive annual color publication «The Batagur».

The best way to describe RRK is to think of it as a dedicated media department for responsible reptile keepers around the world. They produce a range of media on a wide variety of important topics – from videos, podcasts and interviews, to magazines, blogs and documentary films, all highlighting the truth about responsible reptile keeping. The content aims to not only refute the propaganda broadcast by ARCs, but also to help educate the tiny minority of keepers who could do better or create issues that are weaponised by anti-keeping campaigners. And they are also producing content which celebrates the pioneering work being done by knowledgeable and experienced private keepers. Their community has a lot to be proud of, so let’s shout about it!

In the 21st century, the confluence of global warming, habitat loss, invasive species, and disease has caused a rapid decline in biodiversity. Unfortunately, reptiles and amphibians often get overlooked in conservation efforts that predominantly prioritize large charismatic megafauna. That is why Herpetological Conservation International (HCI) was established in 2015 as a registered 501c3 non-profit organization. Its goal is to preserve reptiles and amphibians through a comprehensive approach that includes research funding, community engagement, public outreach, and habitat preservation. HCI’s unique operations model of no paid staff and no board member compensation ensures that 100% of donations go directly to conservation efforts, maximizing impact and transparency.  HCI is proud to offer two flagship grants: The Michael Dee Conservation Grant and the Harold K. Voris (HKV) Aquatic Snake Grant. The Michael Dee Conservation Grant is awarded annually to two exceptional projects with a preference for funding students and early career academics. More information on this grant can be found at https://herpconservation.com/about-the-michael-dee-grant.html The HKV Aquatic Snake Conservation Grant is HCI’s latest initiative, supporting aquatic snake conservation research projects. HCI is currently backing a study on the critically endangered Cerberus microlepis under this grant. For more information on this grant, visit https://herpconservation.com/about-the-hkv-grant.html HCI has also provided funding on a case-by-case basis for research projects, such as Russell’s viper telemetry studies, king cobra telemetry studies, and various herpetological surveys.  In addition to financial support, HCI actively engages in various domestic conservation initiatives. Presently, it is lending its official support to creating the Chuckwalla National Monument in California’s Colorado Desert.  HCI’s outreach initiatives are impactful and far-reaching. A recent example is the CARE (Chytrid Awareness for Reserves and Ecolodges) Project, conceived to raise awareness about the threat of ecotourism as a vector for Chytrid transmission. This project disseminates free informational posters, available in local languages, with scannable QR website links offering guidance on disinfection methods, recommended local disinfectants, and protocols to help ensure the safety of amphibian habitats. For more information about the CARE project, visit https://herpconservation.com/the-campaign.html HCI is actively exploring future projects, including establishing potential habitat reserves in Costa Rica and South Africa, and always accepting proposals for conservation partnerships.

THE FEDERATION OF BRITISH HERPETOLOGISTS (FBH)

The British have a long history of sharing their lives with their pets and the keepers of reptiles and amphibians are no exception. It is estimated that there are now more pet reptiles than pet dogs in the UK and more than one million people keeping reptiles or amphibians in their homes. Many are members of herpetological clubs and societies. However, these keepers have increasingly found themselves vilified and their hobby attacked by anti-pet keeping groups. Many of the arguments from these groups are based on distortions of the truth and have no basis in fact.

The Federation of British Herpetologists (FBH) was founded in 1996 to challenge these flawed argument and to represent the interests of reptile keepers. Headed and supported by specialist and experienced herpetologists from across Britain the FBH exists to promote and support the responsible keeping of reptiles and amphibians. The FBH is an umbrella organisation to which the majority of herpetological societies are affiliated and it represents the largest collective of experienced amateur and professional keepers in the UK. We are the voice of UK reptile keeping.

The FBH is frequently consulted by national and international authorities in relation to impending regulation and to provide fair and balanced advice. We also work closely with responsible animal welfare organisations, and with local and national government regulatory bodies.

The mission of RESPONSIBLE HERPETOCULTURE FOUNDATION ( RHF) – is making positive ethical choices regarding the actions and effects of herpetoculture on the species kept, on human societies, on environment, and on the preservation of species diversity in nature and as a human experience that results in stable maintaining of ex situ populations. Additionally RHF provides an important possibility of species subsequent reintroduction in terms of special, biologically reasonable rewilding or environment supporting projects, through forming a reserve bank of genes in the form of live, breeding animals’ stock, which are genetically, morphologically, physiologically and behaviorally to the maximum possible extent identical to individuals from specific natural populations.

PRESERVATION HERPETOCULTURE (PH)- is a specific subsection of Responsible Herpetoculture that addresses ethnoherpetological sphere by preserving the human experience of the diversity of amphibians and reptiles through their integration in society and culture by establishing self-sustaining populations through captive breeding.

PH encourages and supports those organizations and private breeders who contribute to forming, maintaining and increasing of ex situ populations using only responsible, legal approaches of obtaining, moving and keeping animals.

The RESPONSIBLE HERPETOCULTURE (RH) FOUNDATION is a basically new international educational/public relation project  that needed to be done today  for:

– creation and management of populations of amphibians and reptiles outside the bounds of their natural habitats in the context of the global destruction of natural ecosystems with the aim of forming a reserve bank of genes in the form of live, breeding animals which are genetically, morphologically, physiologically and behaviorally to the maximum extent possible identical to individuals from specific natural populations with the prospect of their subsequent populations  reintroduction;

– Advocating herpetoculture as an integral part of zooculture and effective mechanism to combat poaching and smuggling: captive-bred, healthy adopted animals are always better to meet the needs of world’s pet market than wild-caught animals;

– Protecting herpetoculture from unsound regulatory and legislative policies. Presentation to the media the positive accomplishments of herpetoculture;

– Creating opportunities for experienced (reputable) breeders to obtain, breed and legally move rare and valuable species within the framework of a controlled program;

– Promoting herpetoculture as an important part of ecological education worldwide, RH contribution to the conservation of species in nature;

– Collecting, exchanging and analyzing information that is important for breeding and getting healthy multiple generations of amphibians and reptiles.

The RHP is running «Responsible Herpecoculture Journal» – the professional bimonthly publication on Herpetoculture, united  private breeders,  herpetologists, experts on conservation and zoo management from different countries.

The RHP is  currently working on global «Save Parsons Chamaeleon»(SPC) project.

The RHP is planning to create a Herpetocultural Assessment Group to make and maintain an assessment of the self-sustaining status of endangered  species.

The RHP tagline is «Preserving Amphibians and Reptiles in a Changing World!»

www.responsibleherpetoculture.foundation

For our part, we invite all interested parties to actively cooperate within the RHF framework.

Informing and interacting with the public, of course, is the most important, and possibly the key objective of the RESPONSIBLE HERPETOCULTURE.

People brought up on an edited idea of reality are not able to sensibly judge the problems of nature; they become puppets of the media, which, in turn, serve the interests of governments and corporations.

It would be naive to believe that the RESPONSIBLE HERPETOCULTURE can be limited to only specific issues related to animals’ keeping and breeding. This topic is much wider.

The formation of the ecological culture of human society is an essential part of the process that arouses desire in people to save species and maintain healthy ecosystems.

Herpetoculture suffers from a lack of positive public relations. This is an opportunity for all of us to step up and address this most important issue. Contributing, compiling and analyzing data and information, and publicizing in a unified front through Responsible Herpetoculture can help us achieve this important goal at a reasonable time.
