Dear Colleagues,
Responsible Herpetoculture Project(RHP) was conceived some time ago and started in early 2021. At that time BION Terrarium Center had quite enough funds for its implementation and we used them quite effectively, I believe. Russia’s attack on Ukraine has spoiled our plans. At present, we are forced to use the funds received from Membership and Sponsorship in order to save unique reptile collection of BION and to support its team. Nevertheless, at present we do all we can for implementing direct tasks and goals of the RHP, as you could always see from the very beginning. We are very grateful to all our partners, friends and like-minded people for their most valuable support, both moral and financial! For a number of years, we have directed our funds to support projects and events related to the development, promotion and advocacy of herpetoculture. In this regard, we consider the RHP as our key activity, in which reputable experts from different countries are already participating; more experts are expected to join. After peace comes to Ukraine, we are going to use more globally the funds provided by members and sponsors of the RHP to support specific projects dealing with the study, conservation and breeding of rare species. All finance-related decisions will be made jointly by the Board of Experts. I take this opportunity to express special gratitude to Philippe De Vosjoli, Honorary President of the RHP, for his most important role in the preparation of our project.
Every year we will provide a public report on our activities.
Sincerely yours,
Dmitri Tkachev,
Founder,

THE INITIAL EDUCATION/PROPAGATION GRANTS (100-200-300-500 $$$) from RESPONSIBLE HERPETOCULTURE PROJECT (RHP)
Initial funding to help and encourage amphibians & reptiles education/propagation projects within the framework of RHP. We will support small projects that have clear and understandable description of their format, goals, meet the principles of general ethics, have direct conservation (preferably ex situ) aspect and meet the principles of RH. Prioritized will be the projects with positive results and products (publications, video-lessons, manuals, etc.) that can be used repeatedly and can have prolonged effects and usage.
Important: Initial recipients may apply for second and third year extension grants (including those with higher funding) in case the initial grant is successful.
Prior to the application we do recommend to submit a summary (300-500 words) describing the following aspects of the projects: name of the organization/private person; goals and tasks; anticipated outcomes; other funding sources, if any (both requested and received); information and the status of certain species in Herpetoculture; institution, type of activity. Summaries will be reviewed and successful applicants will then be invited to submit a full application. Full applications shall not be accepted without a summary having been submitted to and approved by RHP Board of Experts.
The following types of projects are recommended, however, the applicants may feel free to propose their own original innovative ideas.
- CREATION OF AN EXTENDED MANUAL
Writing a detailed manual on keeping and breeding of certain species of rare/endangered reptile/amphibian with propagation of their captive breeding as a component of ex situ conservation. The project result should be a well-written original publication with certain level of visual support. The manual will be published on the RHP website with open access. The manuscript should be written in English and have a size of 5 to 10 A4 pages, font Arial 12 pt, single line spacing. It should include illustrations describing the keeping conditions and proving breeding success (300 dpi images, possibly tables, graphs and other ways of visualization). Described in detail should be keeping conditions, way to stimulate breeding behavior, approaches to incubation, raising babies and breeding statistics.
Note: During preparation the manuscript will undergo some minor corrections by RHP editorial board.

- FULL ARTICLE PUBLISHED IN A PEER-REVIEWED JOURNAL (indexed in Scopus, WoS, Index Copernicus and other scientific databases).
Writing and publishing scientific paper that highlights positive effects of Herpetoculture on Society, Culture, Species Conservation. The article should address the impact of captive breeding on either human society or direct conservation of species (in situ or ex situ) and meet the requirements of the chosen journal. Journal choice should be discussed prior to the start of the project and the journal should be mentioned in a first Summary of the project.

- COLLABORATION BETWEEN ZOOS & PRIVATE BREEDERS. COLLABORATION BETWEEN HERPETOLOGY & HERPETOCULTURE.
We attach great importance to these directions. Cooperation in both areas opens up new broad opportunities, which, in our opinion, have great potential, but, unfortunately, are poorly used yet.
From our side, we are ready to involve our experts and partners if there are interests in cooperation from the representatives of zoos & herpetologists.
We expect that such projects will be for long-term cooperation.

- ORGANIZING AN EDUCATIONAL WORKSHOP FOR LOCAL RESIDENTS, PUPILS, STUDENTS (alive or video).
Projects with a strong educational part aimed at raising awareness of certain groups of people about different herpetoculture-related topics. The main part of a project is a lecture/workshop/set of lectures/lessons (in real life, online or in a form of a video-lesson) that address interesting areas of herpetoculture (breeding, conservation, different aspects of keeping, legislation etc.). The duration of a workshop is optional and its details should be stated in the Application and the first Summary.
Examples of an online lecture:
- SHORT VIDEO-MANUALS DEMONSTRATING DIFFERENT ASPECTS OF WORK WITH CERTAIN SPECIES.
A short video (not less than 15 minutes) describing the applicant’s successful experience in breeding certain amphibian or reptile species, successful experience in collaboration between zoos and the private sector in the breeding of amphibians and reptiles or other nature conservation aspects of herpetoculture that would be beneficial for the promotion of Responsible Herpetoculture. Videos should be interesting, well-structured, informative and have an eye-catching component. The video should describe in detail keeping conditions, way to stimulate breeding behavior, approaches to incubation, raising babies, address any way of treatment of diseases or other aspect of herpetoculture. Video format – mp4, HD. Voice acting – English. The videos can be demonstrated as a part of workshop or set of lectures.
Example:
- ADVOCATING HERPETOCULTURE
Writing an article that is dedicated to advocating Herpetoculture highlighting its positive impact on species ex situ saving (maintaining of reserve populations, examples of successful reintroduction/rewilding projects that had strong herpetoculture-related component, saving species in laboratory, importance of the data collected within herpetoculture breeding projects for the global science, legislation analysis and initiatives etc.). Such article will be published as a part of Responsible Herpetoculture online journal. Requirements for the text: font Arial 12 pt, single line spacing, illustrations are very welcome.
Note: During preparation the manuscript will undergo some minor corrections by Responsible Herpetoculture Committee in order to comply with the format of the journal.
