A visit to the 2022 TTPG conference on captive care and breeding of turtles and tortoises

Abstract.  I’ve always been a big fan of herpetological/herpetocultural conferences. In the 1980s through
to the early 1990s I was an active member of the Northern California Herpetological Society in the USA.
The NCHS would host biannual conferences on keeping and breeding reptiles and amphibians in Davis, California. These conferences attracted speakers from zoos and private hobbyists from around the world including well-known keepers like David Barker (Dallas Zoo/Gladys Porter Zoo/ Vida Preciosa International, Inc.), Harry Greene (professor of ecology and evolutionary biology, and Faculty Curator of Herpetology at the Cornell University Museum of Vertebrates), David Grow (former Curator at Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Garden), the late Tom Huff (Director of The Reptile Breeding Foundation in Canada, and credited with first coining the term “herpetoculture”), and the late, great Bert Langerwerf (Agama International). These conferences were always great fun, very informative, and most of all very energizing. It was at these conferences where I first met Philippe de Vosjoli when he presented several
talks on the care and breeding of Ceratophrys, Pyxicephalus, and other frog species, and also where he announced the formation of the American Federation of Herpetoculture, and The Vivarium magazine.
