Turtles are arguably one of the most poached groups of animals on our planet, with over 60%
of species currently endangered (Rhodin et al., 2018) and they don’t receive as much attention
as they deserve. They do suffer though, and they do so in silence. Those who care about their
survival must become their voice, otherwise future generations won’t be able to appreciate
these precious animals in the wild anymore. Hong Kong is a great example of a city where
scientists and those passionate about nature work together tirelessly to protect turtles in as
many ways as possible, regardless of challenges they face and being fully aware that wild
turtles in neighbouring cities and countries are already mostly gone. Hong Kong has, in fact,
become the “last frontier” for some turtle species (Freshwater Collective, 2022).
