Robert Sprackland is a herpetologist interested in zoogeography, taxonomy, and
lizards. He has published Giant Lizards (1992), Giant Lizards second edition
(2009), and the forthcoming Evolution of the Monitors (2026), among others, and
over 100 articles on herpetology and natural history, education, and the YouTube
podcast series, “A Minute—or so—of Herpetology.” Robert earned his Ph.D. at
University College London, after which he became the first staff herpetologist at
the National Museums of Scotland. His research on varanids and limbless lizards
has been conducted at the Smithsonian since 2014
