This article is our personal report on a herpetological expedition to the Bukovel area, conducted in July 2025.

Varanids are some of the most intelligent, complex and interesting reptiles on the planet. They are equally some of the most demanding to keep and difficult to breed. Years of responsible herpetoculture have borne significant successes in many species, while others still pose strong resistance towards settling and
reproducing in controlled conditions. Such was the case with the Caspian monitor (Varanus caspius Eichwald, 1831) [formerly known as Varanus griseus caspius], a species of the Psammosaurus subgenus, notorious for its poor adaptiveness to captivity, its fierce and highly defensive temper, and seemingly high difficulty to reproduce. In this paper, we describe the first and second successful captive breeding of V. caspius in detail, while also highlighting the need for an organized effort towards sustainable conservation through private keeping.
