The Günther’s gecko (Phelsuma guentheri) is one of the largest geckos, reaching about
25 cm in length. After the first men set foot on Mauritius, the Günther’s gecko’s population has
dramatically declined.

According to Dr Nik Cole, Islands Restoration Manager, “the hatch success rate of around 80% is expected for Round Island.”

Being found all across the mainland and other islets around Mauritius before the mid-1800s, the Günther’s gecko is now restricted to Round Island Nature Reserve and, since 2010, to Ile aux Aigrettes following the translocation of 50 individuals.
