After five years of tracking it down in remote ranges, researchers have discovered a new species of gecko. The ocellated velvet gecko (Oedura monilis) is about double the size you would normally find in your house. The species was formerly known as Oedura attenboroughi before it fell out of use due to the species name being synonymised.
With its chunky head, big endearing eyes and soft, pudgy-looking tail, the ocellated velvet gecko is one of Conrad Hoskin’s favourite Australian reptiles. Dr Conrad Hoskin from James Cook University said the “significant discovery” was made in the sandstone gorges at the Gregory Range, west of Townsville.
