Two New Caribbean Crocodile Species Discovered—Hidden in Plain Sight

A groundbreaking genetic study has revealed the existence of two new species of crocodile living on isolated Caribbean islands—a discovery that challenges long-standing assumptions and underscores critical conservation concerns.

The reptiles, previously thought to be populations of the American crocodile (Crocodylus acutus), inhabit Cozumel Island and the Banco Chinchorro Atoll, off Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. Each population is estimated to number around 500 individuals, making them both small and particularly vulnerable.

Researchers conducted DNA analyses, capturing and releasing crocodiles to collect tissue samples. They also compared anatomical traits, such as skull shape, and found clear genetic and morphological differences between the island populations and mainland crocodiles.

Notably, the crocodiles from Banco Chinchorro have longer, broader snouts compared to those from Cozumel.

“This was totally unexpected,” said José Avila-Cervantes, lead geneticist on the study, who added that the team had assumed C. acutus was a single species across much of its range.

Hans Larsson, a biology professor at McGill University, highlighted the conservation implications: without recognizing these as distinct species, efforts to protect their fragile populations may have been inadequate.

Because these newly identified crocodiles are restricted to small, isolated habitats and number only in the hundreds, the researchers emphasize the urgent need for tailored conservation strategies. These include limiting development, managing tourism, and monitoring populations carefully.

This discovery not only deepens our understanding of crocodile biodiversity but also serves as a stark reminder that significant species can remain hidden, even in well-studied animal groups.
