Evolution Without Tadpoles: Three New Live-Bearing Tree Toad Species Discovered in Tanzania

African Tree Toads Nectophrynoides

An international team of researchers has officially described three new species of “Tree Toads” within the genus Nectophrynoides, found in the fragmented forests of Tanzania. These amphibians are causing a stir in the scientific community due to their extraordinary reproductive strategy. Unlike the vast majority of frogs and toads, these species have completely bypassed the aquatic tadpole stage, a feat achieved by less than 1% of known frog species worldwide.

Instead of laying eggs in water, these unique toads practice internal fertilization. The females carry the developing offspring inside their bodies, eventually giving birth to fully formed, miniature versions of themselves. This evolutionary adaptation allows them to thrive in habitats where standing water might be scarce or unpredictable, but it also makes their biology exceptionally specialized and vulnerable to environmental changes.

Unfortunately, the discovery comes with a sobering conservation warning. Most members of the Nectophrynoides genus are already on the brink of extinction due to habitat loss, deforestation, and climate change. One species is already extinct in the wild, and another hasn’t been seen for over two decades. The identification of these three new species highlights the urgent need for habitat protection in the Eastern Arc Mountains of Tanzania to preserve these evolutionary marvels.

For herpetologists and conservationists, these toads represent a critical link in understanding the diversity of vertebrate reproduction. Protecting their micro-habitats is not just about saving a species, but about preserving a rare biological legacy.
