International Mountain Chicken Day is celebrated on September 13th. The day was established to bring awareness to the declining population of this endangered species. The mountain chicken (Leptodactylus fallax) is one of the largest and rarest frog species in the world. Historically, the mountain chicken was widespread across the Caribbean, with populations numbering in the tens of thousands on every island where it lived. Their presence could be easily detected by the calls of males defending their nest burrows from competitors. Over time, however, these have fallen silent on all but two of the islands: Montserrat and Dominica.
The best way to honor International mountain chicken day is to learn about this species and how to protect it.
