Kihansi spray toad

The Kihansi spray toad is the first disappearance attributed to the BdCAPE strain of chytrid fungus.

The coin-size yellow toads led a charmed and secret life in the Udzungwa Mountains of Tanzania. These gregarious insectivores existed only in a hectare of mossy wetlands near the waterfalls of the Kihansi River, soaking up the high humidity from the constant mist.

But then Bd arrived and sealed the amphibian’s fate. The Kihansi spray toad was declared extinct in the wild in 2004.
